What is Coaching?
“Coaching is an ongoing relationship which focuses on clients taking action toward the realization of their visions, goals or desires. Coaching uses a process of inquiry and personal discovery to build the level of awareness and responsibility and provides the client with structure, support and feedback. The coaching process helps clients both define and achieve professional and personal goals faster and with more ease than would be possible otherwise.” –From the International Coaching Federation
An Anecdote
When my daughter was about three or four years old, a training wheel came loose from her bike and fell off. I didn’t rush to put it right back on as she urged; I left it off. Instead, I held her bike still as she climbed on for a ride and she lost her balance about a second after she launched forward. In protest to my decision, she screamed at the top of her lungs, “I can’t do this!” I held her bike still for her over and over again that morning and replied to her “I can’t do this!” with “Yes, you can.” Slowly her body learned how to balance the bike while she pedaled forward. Except she wasn’t aware right away of her success. I stood and watched, a little amused as she continued to scream, “I can’t do this; why won’t you just put the wheel back on; I’m going to fall,” while riding slowly and steadily without any help. “You’re doing it,” I told her and she grew quiet. Finally, she knew it was true; she could do it. From that moment forward, she nearly flew on that bike.
Change
One of the biggest under-statements of all is change isn’t easy. You want to get better control of your health and maintain a healthy weight; you know you need to change your eating habits to avoid a serious illness; you have to manage your time better to allow for self-care but you’ve tried time and time again and just can’t seem to meet with success. Shortly after your first step in your new direction, you fall down. And instead of getting back up on your new path, you proclaim, “I can’t do this!” and return to the comfort of your old, familiar patterns. For no matter how unhealthy or destructive your behavior is, it’s what you know.
